1. Limit your fast food intake:
It is very easy to waste days (or nights) on meals from roadside restaurants, eating fatty treats and, in the process, neglecting your physical health. Instead of falling into the fast food trap, remember – food should be your ally in maintaining energy and alertness. So choose wisely! Bring as much healthy food from home as possible to give you the necessary strength, or choose it wisely in shops along your route, and most importantly, drink as much water as possible; avoid carbonated and alcoholic beverages.
2. Develop an exercise plan:
Truck driving can seriously affect your physical well-being. Just imagine – spending the whole day in the same position? Add unhealthy food and drinks to that, and you will quickly see your health deteriorate. But hang in there, because we have a few tricks up our sleeve to help you stay in shape!
Mandatory breaks are your best friend! Make the most of every break to refresh your body. Many experienced drivers know the secret – choosing the right parking spot can work wonders. A walk in the fresh air, a forest, a beach or even a dip in the sea – all are great ways to restore your energy and preserve your physical and mental well-being.
3. Master your company's safety regulations:
To be a true professional on the road, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules of the game, namely the safety regulations at your workplace. Even if this sounds like a school lesson, trust us, it makes sense! To not hesitate to ask colleagues and supervisors questions if something is unclear. Remember, safety in your new job is the main thing! So make safety your top priority.
4. Build good relationships with colleagues:
- Be as punctual as a Swiss watch! People value reliability, and that is crucial in the trucking world too. Your consistency will be the first thing people notice.
- Kindness. Always treat others as we would like them to treat us. Be kind to everyone you work with, because it creates a positive atmosphere.
- To not forget that you are an ambassador for your carrier. Show your best side on the road because, believe me, your truck is like your personal shield that carries your reputation.
- Listen to instructions – because there is always something new to learn in the trucking world. Your job is your training ground, and every instruction is like a map to your driving career.
- Complaints. Remember, complaints about your work are like bad weather on the road – unavoidable, but not unsolvable. Learn from them.
5. Always get enough rest:
Sleep is important regardless of the job you do. Lack of sleep can lead to sluggishness, headaches, slower reactions and reflexes, immune system disorders and hallucinations, among other effects. As a truck driver, you have a legal obligation to get enough sleep between shifts, because being tired at work can endanger your life and the lives of others on the road.
6. Stop, look and listen!
Experienced drivers say this is crucial – it is better to be safe than to later try to explain to your boss why their truck looks like it is from an action movie. Reversing a heavy vehicle can be delicate, so always be careful before reversing and do not hesitate to stop, get out and make sure yourself that you will not cause any damage.
